Product video for marketplaces: what to film
A photo shows what a product looks like; a video shows how it works. What to film for each product type, how to keep one style across a catalogue, where to start.
In short. A video on a product page answers what a photo can't: how the thing works, how big it is in your hand, how it moves and sounds. Don't film what looks pretty — film what people pay for, and that differs from one product type to the next.
On a product page the shopper decides one thing: is this what I need? A photo shows shape and colour. But whether a mouse sits well in the hand, how a chair adjusts, how the backlight glows — you only see that in motion. That is where video removes the doubt that makes people close the tab and "think about it".
What to film: a treatment for each product type
A common mistake is filming the whole catalogue to one template. A mouse is shown differently from a chair:
- Small tech and gadgets — in the hand, close up: buttons, switches, lighting, response to an action.
- Large items — scale and adjustment: height, tilt, what happens when it folds.
- Accessories — together with the main product: what they fit and why you need them.
- Products where material matters — fabric texture, stitching, finish. Things a photo flattens into one surface.
Our example: the Lorgar gaming range
Lorgar has a wide range: mice, chairs, cameras, peripherals. The task was twofold — show each category so its own strengths come through, and keep the brand recognisable across the whole catalogue.
We made a series with a different treatment per category and one shared style. The clips now work in four places: advertising, product pages on the site and marketplaces, the brand's social media and sales-support materials.
Lesson. One production, four channels. Plan the formats up front and a product-page clip also becomes an ad and a sales tool.
One style across the catalogue
A catalogue where every video was shot "however it turned out" looks like a pile of random clips. When light, pace, colour and captions match, the shopper sees one brand, not a hundred unrelated products. Series work also lowers the price: the approach is settled on the first clips, then the process runs and each next clip costs noticeably less.
Formats: one shoot, several platforms
Marketplaces, your own product page and social media each have their own format and length requirements. The right way is to shoot for all of them at once instead of cropping a horizontal clip into a vertical one. Then one shoot gives you the full set: for the product page, the feed and the ads.
Where to start with hundreds of items
- Start with your best-selling category. That is where video pays back first, and where we settle the style.
- Gather samples. Filming needs the physical products.
- No sample, or it's abroad? Part of the catalogue can be covered with 3D video, built from drawings or photos.
- Then run it as a flow. Once the style is approved, new items are added in series.
What it costs
On our price list a single product video starts at €1,500, a series of several products in one style at €3,000, and a whole-catalogue contract is priced individually. Prices exclude VAT. The bigger the range, the cheaper each clip.
